As the Brazil world cup 2014 soccer progresses I wonder just how many people are aware of the disturbing facts connected to the competition; what could be called the ugly side of the beautiful game.

Part of the staging included $4.47 billion (US dollars sterling) of Brazilian tax payer's money going to Swiss based FIFA (the Federation Internationale de Football Association), but the world cup competition is not for the indigenous people, it's for greed driven corporations, corrupt politicians and rich tourists.

Indeed, some of us have been following the protests from outraged Brazilians complaining in cities all over the country about local and national government corruption, grossly excessive spending on the world cup somewhat to the tune of $40 billion, while underfunding essential much needed to improve on services like transportation, education and healthcare. Reports from the Ministry of Energy confirm that not far off a million Brazilians live without electricity...

Danilo Cajazeira a keen amateur soccer player in Sao Paulo is an active member of the People's Committee, demanding that human rights stop being violated, all of which are centred on the world cup. During the building and construction of the new stadiums, he reports in so many words that there have been hundreds and thousands of evictions in the area, some forced violently or disrespectfully onto the streets and taken to veritable concentration camps.

Traders businesses have been terminated... Then there have also been a number of public areas given to certain corporations without dispensation. Additionally, there is a rise in the unlawful sex industry involving women and children.

In anticipation of the backlash from the people some $0.66 billion has been spent on police armament and security. As well as these police measures, laws have been passed to deal with social protesters, already having special law courts put in place. Those accused may be judged in 'courts of execution' standing to receive severe penalties while not given the right to an attorney.

The whole thing has been described as repressive and militarized, typical of a dictatorship scenario. Some citizens say that police are not just detaining vandals, but they are also invading the homes of protesters who have been actively involved in social movements for some time long before the world cup: As a way of getting at these individuals police have given their relatives not having anything to do with protests intimidating calls.

However, the Brazilian people's outrage, concern that public money instead of going to the essentials like transportation, descent housing and energy is getting funnelled off into private corporate interests instead, has further fuelled the want to see change.

Will the Brazilian people win the struggle as the uprising continues? Last year there was a massive grassroots outcry against price increases in public transportation. Those who protested now find others joining them, seeking justice from the world cup scenario.

The Brazilian general elections are in October. Many think that the government will use the restrictions imposed backed by repressive legislation long after the world cup. However, the people with its powerful movement are determined to find new ways of doing politics.
